What If Binge Eating Really Does Feel Like Coping?

You can acknowledge the relief bingeing seems to offer and still work toward recovery. Kathryn explains how.

In this episode

What if binge eating feels like a coping mechanism for stress, loneliness, anxiety, or emotional pain? In Episode 211 of the Brain over Binge Podcast, Kathryn Hansen explores this question without asking you to deny your experience. She acknowledges that bingeing can offer temporary distraction or relief while explaining why that does not mean you need it to cope, or that you must resolve every emotional problem before you can recover.

Kathryn distinguishes between difficult emotions and the urges to binge that may accompany them. An argument, a stressful day, or a painful experience can trigger a learned urge, but that urge does not have to determine what you do next. Your emotions deserve attention and care, and you can learn to dismiss the suggestion to binge while addressing those feelings separately.

The episode also explores how dismissing binge urges can create more space to use healthier coping skills. Creating that space can help you reach out for support, rest, or respond to the actual problem. You do not have to cope perfectly to make progress in binge eating recovery.

Finally, Kathryn encourages you to consider the whole experience of bingeing: the brief escape, the problems that remain, and the additional distress afterward. Her message is that you can acknowledge the temporary relief and still choose to work toward a life without binge eating.
