In traditional eating disorder therapy, patients are usually told their binge eating/purging is a symptom of deep underlying issues or a coping mechanism for life’s problems. I do not believe it is, and I think this philosophy can give binge eaters/bulimics plenty of excuses to continue their destructive behavior. I believe binge eating is a function of the brain – one that can be overcome.
I realize that by blaming binge eating on the brain, it may seem like I am running the same risks as blaming it on emotional problems; but in my book, I am not giving binge eaters/bulimics more excuses. My discussion is empowering, not another way to justify harmful actions. My purpose is to offer an alternative, commonsense explanation of binge eating that promotes self-control and self-directed recovery.
